Building A Home Gym On A Shoestring Budget

Hate having to wait around to use a piece of equipment? Ever feel uncomfortable working out next to the fitter/stronger guys or gals at the gym? Are you always coming up with excuses not to go because it just doesn’t fit in with your day? If this sounds like you, then bringing the commercial gym into the comfort of your own home could be the very best thing you could do for your fitness goals.

Some of the many benefits of working out at home include:

  • 24/7 opening times – Having a gym at home is extremely convenient. When dealing with kids and hectic day to day life, finding the time to get down to the gym is not high on your list of priorities. If your gym equipment is setup in the next room you can’t use those excuses anymore.
  • You’re the DJ – If you’re like me and you’re constantly trying to hit personal bests, then listening to the latest Westlife track isn’t going to get you pumped. Now you’re at home you can listen to anything you want. So be prepared to dig out all those old rock CD’s!
  • Be yourself – No need to worry about how you look or how you come across to the mirror lovers anymore, you know who they are! If you’re one yourself, stop…. stop now, for the love of god! In your home gym there’s just you. So you can scream, swear, spit, shout, who cares, nobody can see you.
  • Money in your pocket – THE biggest benefit of all, cost! If your local gym is charging $500+ for a yearly membership why not set up your own for less? It doesn’t matter what fitness goals you have, whether you’re looking to build muscle, lose weight, or burn fat and tone up, you can build an effective home gym for less than $400.

Equipment you will need

Before stepping out and buying any equipment you can think of, it’s important that you list your goals first then plan from there. If your goal is to gain muscle mass, then obviously you’re equipment is going to be a little different to that of someone looking to simply tone up and shred some belly fat.

There’s a lot to consider, but for a well rounded affordable home gym you’ll need:

  • 6ft standard barbell (with spin-locks)
  • Weight plates (cast iron)
  • Adjustable weight bench (if you can opt for the Ironmaster Super Bench – costly but well worth it) If you want to read more about this weight bench my Ironmaster Super Bench review will help you out.
  • Doorway chin up bar
  • Adjustable dumbbells (with spin-locks)
  • Yoga mat
  • Skipping rope
  • Balance ball

As a cost effective solution, instead of buying expensive cardio equipment such as treadmills, elliptical trainers, or exercise bikes, I’d simply go for a run outdoors.

How much will this all cost?

  • 6ft barbell with dumbbells and cast iron 160lb weight plate set ($150-$200)
  • Adjustable weight bench ($50-$80)
  • Doorway chin up bar ($20)
  • Yoga mat ($10)
  • Skipping rope ($10)
  • Balance ball ($15)

That’s a total investment of just $335. That being just a conservative estimate of course, with a little bit of bargain hunting I’m sure you could get all the above for much cheaper.

Considering an average yearly gym membership costs around $500 on average, that’s your money back and then some. There are many more benefits to working out at home, but it’s not for everyone. I for one can testify just how effective it has been for me since I’ve started working out at home.
