Anxiety is a state of mind that may affect an individual in so many ways.  If left untreated, anxiety can turn out to be something so disruptive and overwhelming.  The symptoms of anxiety should not be taken lightly.  It is because these symptoms can definitely consume your entire capability to be productive.  Fortunately, anxiety can be treated in several ways.  And, one of the most effective ways to manage anxiety is to exercise regularly.

Exercise as an Anxiety-Reliever

According to therapist Sally R. Connolly, exercise does not provide complete cure for anxiety.  However, the physiological responses that occur during exercise can greatly alleviate the person’s symptoms of anxiety.  This is because the physical benefits of exercise will work together towards achieving a more stable psychological condition in an individual.  Luckily, one does not have to exhaust himself from doing strenuous exercises.  A fifteen minute daily exercise of moderate intensity is already enough to be able to reap its benefits. There is enough evidence to show that exercise provides relief from anxiety as much as medications do.  Actually, the relieving effects of exercise last longer than the effects of anti-anxiety medications.

People Who Get the Most out of Exercise

Every person must bear in mind that each exercise performed is never a waste of time.  Everybody does benefit from exercise no matter how it is being done. The following are some of the individuals who may benefit much from exercise:

–          An individual who religiously follows his exercise regimen.

–          People who are sedentary at work or at home.

–          Those who suffer from severe anxiety.

–          People who indulge in aerobic exercises.

How Exercise Helps Relieve Anxiety

Anxiety usually occurs due to an increase in an individual’s heart rate.  But, if the person exercises he will feel more relaxed and his heart will gradually work more efficiently over a period of time.  This is true especially if the individual indulges in aerobic activity. The effects of exercise on the person’s heart and lungs would be too remarkable to ignore.  These positive physiological responses will then result to an improved self-esteem and overall well-being.  Thus, the feelings of anxiety will be averted.

The benefits of exercise will also be deeply rooted into the brain.  In turn, the person will be able to achieve better cognitive functioning. On the contrary, several functions of the brain can be impaired if anxiety is left untreated. Regular exercise enables the brain to produce chemicals that are essential in dealing with stressful situations.

Kinds of Exercises that Help Alleviate Anxiety

The individual may choose to indulge in any forms of exercise to relieve him from anxiety or depression.  However, the best kinds of exercises for anxiety sufferers are those that increase one’s heart rate.  Exercise such as hiking, swimming, biking, and dancing provide enormous relief for anxiety.  These activities not only boost the production of endorphins which are also called as “feel-good” hormones.  They also provide opportunities for socialization which lessens an individual’s vulnerability to anxiety and depression.  Hiking, biking, and running activities that are being done outdoors also exposes people to nature.  Hearing the sound of chirping birds or the sound of the blowing wind can definitely relieve one from stress and anxiety.

Exercise for Better Quality of Life

Regular exercise does wonders to eliminate feelings of anxiety.  It also increases one’s tolerance against pressure and tension brought about by hectic activities of daily living.  Making use of an exercise regimen as a form of anxiety management technique has been widely recommended by experts worldwide.  It never fails to reduce those negative physical and psychological reactions brought about by stress and anxiety. As the person progresses from moderate to high intensity levels of exercise, his quality of life will also improve.  Not to mention the significant impact of self-discovery that occurs every time the person exercises. These things will inevitably lead to happier and more productive life which may never become a reality if the person refuses to be physically active.
